Rock Climbing & Rappelling
The Great Smoky Mountains offers many opportunities for rock climbing and rappelling. The Great Smokies is truly a paradise for the outdoor adventurer. Here in the oldest mountains in the world, outdoor enthusiasts revel on endless trails in our national forest, national park and wilderness areas.
The Nantahala National Forest lies in the mountains
and valleys of western North Carolina between Waynesville and Murphy.
Elevations in the NNF range from a high of 5,800 feet at Lone Bald in
Jackson County to a low of 1,200 feet along the Tusquittee River in
Cherokee County. Check out Whiteside Mountain, named for its sheer,
white cliffs. This mountain rises more than 2,100 feet above the Nantahala
National Forest. A national recreation trail, making a 2-mile loop,
winds to the 4,930-foot summit.
